This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

Delmer:
Is there a transcript of this available anywhere? I stopped listening around the 3:00 mark. The voiceover sounds like some sort of speech synthesizer; I can't take it.

An very interesting concept, complete with in depth research and excellent delivery. But the video of a guy watching a record spin is kinda boring.

As a drummer, I submit to you that your point is nonsense. So many amateurs get high and mighty (I'd kill anyone who stole my blah, blah...), but never step outside of themselves to see the relevance of any of the music created through sampling. If you're so afraid of others stealing your stuff, maybe your pool of inspiration from which you pull is tragically shallow. Mine isn't, which is why I'm not worried about it. A person's vision extends further than their capabilities.

That was interesting, but it could've taken a lot less time and not been in such a monotone voice.

So, more sampling = more creativity. Why didn't I think of that? With his keen mind, no doubt Nate has a bright future in marketing, or perhaps politics. No wonder reissues are 2/3 of all music sales and people hate "new" music. You can only get away with pissing on people and tellling them it's raining for so long before they wise up.

honestly, this is why i don't like drum n bass that much. to me it's too much rehashing. i want as little of that as possible...well, this is also the reason i hate genre format music (scene music, genre rock, whatever you want to call it). i like bands that are outside the lines. my favorite artists, composers, bands, etc. will always be the ones who were either never followed, or were one of the first for others to follow, and i do extensive research to know all i can of who is who in this.

It's easy to share when you yourself own nothing. I think the samples you take are more valuable than anything you create.
