Granted, that was a bit below the belt, Sure. I think the Odyssey references were appropriate because Odysseus is a bit of an archetype, one we all can relate to if we've lived vividly enough. For instance, the 'barbarian' cyclops who asks him for his autograph, even though he's no idea what Nick is really about; what can you do with a guy like that but blind him: i.e. keep him from looking at your art, whether or not he applauds it. You need to reject the approbation of those who don't get you.

Yeah but the Lazarus album as a whole was very much about stripping back the excesses of the Abattoir record, wasn't it? Going back to the earlier stuff, which was very rarely about melody, more primal, more about the words being sung-talked or shouted at the listener. In this they're just being whispered into your ear.

I tried to say that Cave's songs like Abattoir Blues are talking about this boredom and hopelessness but do it with well-thought-out lyrics and an amazing melody, unlike this song.

Touchy, touchy. No need to get personal, we're not talking about me, but Mr. Nick Cave. The fact that you're attacking me personally just proves that you have to intelligent response to my comment.

Maybe your the boring one, with out the ability to create the images his words have to offer.

Thumbs-downing is fine. What are the Odyssey references and why/how are they appropriate? I agree that the song captures the boredom and hopelessness of these holes, but this does not mean that the song has to be boring and hopeless. Nick Cave is a master at these kind of songs (i.e.Abattoir Blues).

Nick's brilliant and I love the guy but he looks outta place in any thing but a shiny suit and button down white shirt. And dont get me started on the mustache. Good song but can be slimmed down a couple minutes.

its not george clooney, but it sure as hell looked like him. besides, george is the most famous actor in america, i dont think a self-satisfied man like him would want to be in a music video for 1-2 seconds. lol

This dude can jam. He's almost rapping at times. Cool voice and great lyrics. The lyrics of most songs today are so shallow and lazy (rhyming a word with the same word and S like that). How old is this little ditty? I heard a clip of it on a radio program about Ohio State football (Bucknuts Radio Hour) and just heard the whole song for the first time here. Is this from the 70's? TIA.

NORDICA:
Everyone is thumbs-downing you. Rough luck, that. However, his references to The Odyssey are not merely trying to up the tone of the song; they are well integrated and appropriate. Moreover, the intricate emotions of this song are dead-bang on to the listless loneliness one encounters if you've ever worked door (or stage) in these sleazy hell holes when you're broke and far from anyone who gives a rat's ass if you live or die. Nick captures it perfectly. Keep the comments coming though, Slovak.
